Virginia Rose Platter | Classic American Dinnerware by Homer Laughlin
Our Virginia Rose platter carries forward a tradition that began in the 1930s, when this delicate floral pattern first graced American tables. Each platter features the signature pink and yellow rose motif with soft green leaves, framed by a gently scalloped edge that adds vintage elegance to any setting.
Crafted at our West Virginia facility using the same high-fired vitrified china process we've perfected over generations, this serving piece delivers restaurant-grade durability for everyday family meals and special gatherings alike. The 13-inch oval shape offers generous room for roasts, turkey, layered salads, or holiday side dishes.
We designed this platter to work beautifully on its own or as part of a full Virginia Rose table setting. The warm cream background and hand-applied floral decals create a timeless look that complements both modern farmhouse and traditional dining rooms.

Materials & Manufacturing
We produce every Homer Laughlin Virginia Rose platter using our proprietary vitrified china body—a dense, high-fired ceramic that resists chipping and crazing far better than standard earthenware. The clay mixture is pressed into plaster molds, then fired at temperatures exceeding 2300°F to create the glassy, non-porous surface you see.
Our decorators apply the Virginia Rose floral decals by hand before the final glaze firing, which permanently fuses the design into the glaze layer. This process ensures the pattern won’t fade or wash away with repeated use and dishwashing. We use only lead-free, food-safe glazes that meet or exceed FDA standards for direct food contact.

Sizing & Capacity
The 13-inch measurement represents the longest dimension of the oval, with the platter measuring approximately 9.5 inches across at its widest point. The gently sloped well sits about 0.75 inches deep at the center, providing enough depth to hold sauces and pan juices without risk of spillover during serving.
This size comfortably holds a 12-pound turkey, a standing rib roast for six, or family-style portions of vegetables and casseroles for eight to ten guests. The raised scalloped rim keeps food contained while creating an elegant presentation border. When stacking multiples for storage, the rim design nests securely without excessive height—four platters stack to roughly 4.5 inches.
Care & Maintenance
Our vitrified china construction makes this platter fully dishwasher safe—we recommend the top rack for best results, though the platter can withstand bottom-rack placement if needed. Avoid sudden temperature shocks, such as moving the platter directly from a hot oven to cold water, as rapid thermal changes can stress any ceramic.
For stubborn stains or utensil marks, a paste of baking soda and water gently lifts residue without scratching the glaze. We do not recommend abrasive scouring powders or steel wool, which can dull the glossy finish over time. If you notice minor utensil marks on the well surface, a brief soak in warm soapy water usually releases the marks with light scrubbing.

Common Questions About Your Virginia Rose Platter
Yes, you can use this platter in the oven up to 400°F. We recommend placing the platter in a cold oven and preheating them together rather than moving a cold platter into a hot oven, as sudden temperature changes can stress any ceramic. The platter works well for warming rolls, keeping side dishes hot, or reheating leftovers, though we designed it primarily as a serving piece.
Absolutely. Our vitrified china construction makes this platter fully dishwasher safe on either the top or bottom rack. The high-fired glaze won't fade or degrade with repeated washing. For best longevity, we suggest the top rack when possible, and avoid overcrowding so pieces don't knock against each other during the wash cycle.
We manufacture current Virginia Rose pieces using the original mold designs and comparable floral decals, so the appearance is nearly identical to vintage examples from the 1930s through 1970s. The main differences are the backstamp marking and very minor variations in glaze tone due to modern materials. Both versions deliver the same durability and classic look. Vintage pieces may show natural wear or crazing from decades of use, while new production arrives in pristine condition.
This size comfortably serves eight to ten people for most dishes. You can fit a 12-pound turkey, a standing rib roast for six with vegetables around the sides, or family-style portions of casseroles and side dishes for a dinner party. For larger gatherings, consider pairing this with our 15-inch Virginia Rose platter or using multiple serving pieces.
Yes, the scalloped rim is designed to nest securely when you stack multiple platters. Four platters stack to roughly 4.5 inches in height, making them cabinet-friendly even if you collect several serving pieces. The rim prevents direct surface contact between platters, which protects the pattern from abrasion during storage.
We offer a full Virginia Rose dinnerware line including dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, cups and saucers, serving bowls, gravy boats, and creamers. You can build a complete table setting or add individual pieces to complement this platter. All items feature the same pink and yellow floral motif and scalloped rim design for a coordinated look.
Our decorators apply the Virginia Rose floral decals before the final glaze firing. During that high-temperature firing, the decal fuses permanently into the glaze layer, which means the pattern sits under a protective glass-like surface. This process makes the design highly resistant to fading, scratching, or washing away—unlike overglaze decorations that sit on top of the finished glaze and can wear over time.
