Pattern History & Design

We introduced the Virginia Rose pattern during the golden age of American dinnerware manufacturing, when floral decals and soft ivory bodies defined formal dining. The signature rose cluster at each piece’s center was applied by hand using ceramic decals—a technique our decorators still employ today. The scalloped edge and embossed border echo the Art Deco influences of the era while maintaining timeless versatility.

Collectors often seek Virginia Rose for its clean lines and compatibility with other vintage Homer Laughlin shapes. The pattern pairs naturally with our classic dinnerware silhouettes and can be mixed with solid ivory pieces from the same period. Each production run honors the original mold specifications, ensuring new additions match pieces passed down through generations.

Construction & Materials

American Vitrified China

Virginia Rose is produced using our proprietary vitrified china formula—fired at temperatures exceeding 2,400°F to fuse clay particles into a single, non-porous body. This process eliminates moisture absorption and creates the signature ring when you tap the rim. The ivory base is our standard restaurant-grade china body, known for opacity and resistance to crazing.

Glaze & Decoration

We apply a clear lead-free glaze over the decal and china body in a second kiln firing. The glaze seals the decoration beneath a glass-smooth surface that resists staining and scratching. Because the floral motif is under-glaze, it won’t fade or wash away with repeated use and dishwasher cycles.

Styling

Care & Maintenance

Virginia Rose is formulated for daily use. We recommend top-rack dishwasher placement to avoid impact from heavier items, though the vitrified body can withstand commercial dishwasher cycles. Avoid sudden temperature shocks—do not transfer pieces directly from freezer to oven.

For stubborn stains, a paste of baking soda and water gently lifts discoloration without scratching the glaze. Metal utensils may leave faint gray marks; these rub off easily with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Store plates with felt separators or paper towels if stacking for long periods to preserve the decal edges.

Matches My Grandmother's Set Perfectly
I inherited six dinner plates and wanted to complete a service for twelve. The new pieces arrived and I honestly can't tell them apart from the 1950s originals. The rose decal is identical and the weight feels exactly the same. So grateful Homer Laughlin kept the molds.

Beautiful Everyday China
We use Virginia Rose daily and it's held up beautifully through two years of dishwasher cycles. The floral design adds just enough elegance for Sunday dinners without feeling fussy. I've added serving pieces gradually and they all match perfectly.

Quality You Can Feel
The weight and ring of these plates tell you they're real china, not mass-market ceramic. I love that they're microwave safe—my vintage pieces aren't—so I can actually use them for reheating. The scalloped edge is more pronounced than I expected in the best way.

I pair Virginia Rose dinner plates with solid ivory salad plates from the Fiesta line and the ivory tones match seamlessly. The ability to layer patterns without clashing makes entertaining so much easier. Guests always comment on the table.

Thrilled to Find New Production
I've been collecting Virginia Rose at antique shops for years and was thrilled to discover Homer Laughlin still makes it. Ordered a platter and gravy boat to fill gaps in my set. Arrived beautifully packaged and the quality exceeds my vintage pieces.

Heirloom Quality at Fair Price
We received a starter set as a wedding gift and have been adding pieces as our family grows. The durability is remarkable—we have toddlers and haven't chipped a single plate. This is dinnerware we'll pass down someday.

Good to know

Common Questions About Virginia Rose Dinnerware

Yes—we use the original molds, the same ivory china body formula, and hand-applied decals that match the 1930s specifications. The vitrified china construction and firing temperatures remain unchanged. New pieces integrate seamlessly with inherited or vintage Virginia Rose, though very early pieces may show slight backstamp variations. The pattern itself is consistent across all production eras.

Absolutely. Our lead-free glaze and vitrified china body are microwave safe and dishwasher safe. We recommend top-rack placement in the dishwasher to minimize jostling. Avoid extreme temperature changes—don't move pieces directly from refrigerator to microwave—but normal reheating and washing cycles pose no risk to the decal or glaze.

Check the backstamp on the bottom of each piece. Genuine Homer Laughlin Virginia Rose will show our company name, the pattern name, and often a date code or shape designation. The floral decal appears centered on dinner plates and offset on smaller pieces. The scalloped edge and embossed rim are consistent across all items in the line.

We offer 10-inch dinner plates, 7-inch salad plates, 6-inch bread plates, multiple bowl sizes including coupe soup and rimmed cereal, 9-ounce cups with 6-inch saucers, and a full range of serving pieces. Platters come in 11-inch, 13-inch, and 15-inch ovals. Covered vegetable bowls, gravy boats, sugar-and-creamer sets, and specialty items like cake plates round out the collection.

Our vitrified china process makes Virginia Rose highly resistant to chipping and crazing. The 2,400°F+ firing fuses the clay body into a single non-porous structure. While any ceramic can chip if struck hard enough, normal use—including stacking and dishwashing—should not damage the glaze or body. Crazing occurs when glaze expands differently than the clay beneath; our matched formulas prevent this.

Yes—Virginia Rose coordinates beautifully with our solid ivory lines like Century and Fiesta Ivory, as well as other vintage floral patterns like Eggshell Georgian. The ivory base tone is consistent across these collections. Many customers layer Virginia Rose dinner plates with solid salad plates or mix serving pieces from complementary patterns to create a personalized table setting.

Every piece is made in our Newell, West Virginia pottery, where we've been producing American dinnerware since 1871. We control every step—clay mixing, molding, decorating, glazing, and firing—in our facility. This allows us to maintain the quality standards and pattern consistency Virginia Rose collectors expect. Each piece is inspected individually before it ships.
